Chapter 13
Ostensibly, the trip was for the purpose of retrieving the Subaru. In a city the size of Austin, I needed transportation. I was also preparing the house for sale. Even if I returned to live in Aspen eventually, the house was too big for just me. I honestly couldn’t afford the house on my own after buying Scott out, anyway. So, with my depression becoming more than I could bear, I headed back to the only place that had ever felt like home, the Rocky Mountains. After hours of delay before takeoff in Denver, and a bumpy flight in which the captain had threatened to turn the plane away from the winds of the Roaring Fork Valley and land in Grand Junction, I finally landed at the Aspen Airport.
Kitty surprised me at the airport, waiting for me in the baggage claim area. I expected she would have long since given up on me. I was, after all, more than five hours late. Bedraggled and exhausted, I walked automatically into her hug when I saw her, melting into the warm affection she offered, something to which I was no longer accustomed.
“You truly look terrible, sweetie,” she observed, stepping back from me. “What’s happened to you?” I just nodded my agreement fatalistically.
“Well, you’re breathtaking, as always.” I wasn’t lying. She did look incredible, especially since I’d missed her desperately. She smiled and hooked her arm through mine to guide me over to the luggage claim.
“Have you eaten?” I shook my head.
“I had coffee and pretzels on the plane.” Kitty ran her fingers through my hair, straightening it as we waited.
“Where’s your purse?” I shrugged.
“I was only allowed one carry-on bag, so I packed a big bag and my computer.” Kitty smiled.
“Don’t take this wrong, sweetie, but you look like you could use a stiff drink and some lipstick in the worst way. Do you have lipstick in that enormous sack?” I started fishing through my oversized bag, digging around for the tiny tube. After a few minutes, when I hadn’t found it, Kitty handed me hers. “I think this color will work on you.” I accepted the tube and started to apply lipstick blindly. She took it away from me with a sharp shake of her head and finished painting my lips for me. She then smiled at her handiwork.
“That’s better, sweetie. You look a little more pulled together.” She tightened her arm across my shoulders. “Has the divorce really been so brutal?” I sighed, about to answer, when I spotted my bag on the conveyor. I stepped forward and seized the handle, dragging it to the floor with a thud. When I started to pick it up Kitty reached down and lifted it, dropping it at her side.
“I can carry my own luggage, Kitty,” I said sharply. She shook her head. “I wouldn’t want you to break a nail,” I softened.
“You look half dead, Lise. At least let’s get a steak in you before you attempt any heavy lifting.” I sighed again, shaking my head.
